I write to make complex ideas accessible and actionable. My work explores how bias shows up in everyday life, and what we can do about it. Below, you’ll find a selection of my published work across academic journals and public platforms.

To Sustain DEI Momentum,
Companies Must Invest in 3 Areas
George Floyd’s murder in 2020 — and the subsequent social uprising around racial injustice — catalyzed an unprecedented investment in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Organizations of all sizes and across industries pledged their support to Black employees and other underrepresented groups, to building more diverse and equitable companies, and to using their power for good.

DEI Initiatives Are Futile Without Accountability
Brian Flores, former Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, recently filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL and each of its 32 franchises, citing racial discrimination. Though his experience was particularly egregious, other Black coaches have shared their stories of times they believe they were only interviewed so that teams could claim compliance with the so-called Rooney Rule, which was created to codify the practice of interviewing candidates of color for open League positions.

justice issues at work. . Here’s how
Evelyn Carter PhD, managing director at Paradigm, believes this past year should continue to be a powerful catalyst to put us on a different, better path for the future if we have frank conversations.

Why is President Trump trying to kill off diversity training programs?
President Trump passed an executive order seeking to prevent government agencies and federal contractors from providing certain types of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training to their employees. In the weeks since the order was issued, several companies, universities, and government agencies suspended diversity-related training, programs, activities, and events.

How companies and individuals can use Juneteenth to practice active allyship
Two Black female leaders whose careers have focused on helping build more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations explain how to commemorate Juneteenth and encourage equality and inclusivity.

Restructure Your Organization to Actually Advance Racial Justice
For diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practitioners like me, the influx of interest we’re seeing from organizations that want to both support their Black employees and upskill their workforce around racism, bias, and inclusivity is unprecedented. Plus, all of this is happening in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which is also having an outsized impact on Black people in domains ranging from health to employment.

Starbucks’ diversity training won’t help unless it makes white people uncomfortable
“Diversity trainings don’t work” is an oft-repeated refrain. And yet, Starbucks will devote an entire day to “conduct racial-bias training to address implicit bias and prevent discrimination” for all employees. This decision follows last week’s incident in which a Starbucks store manager called the police on two black men in a Philadelphia Starbucks.
